Signs of trauma.

Trauma is the prolonged emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person’s sense of safety, sense of self, the ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships.

Everyone does not respond the same way to a traumatic event and most people will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. It is normal and understandable to not want to face your trauma, to do the challenging work. Trauma makes you feel vulnerable, and this is why it is foundational to my approach to make you feel safe and comfortable in a supportive space. You cannot heal if you do not feel safe.

Trauma

Traumatic growth.

A traumatic event can overwhelm you.

Due to being overwhelmed it can be difficult to think through the traumatic event and process it. It can be difficult to come to terms with what happened. Sometimes traumatic events can shake up your belief systems and you come to doubt what you have always believed. For example, after a traumatic event you may no longer believe that the world is a safe place to be, that people are good, or that you have any control over your life.

But overcoming past trauma can help you grow.

There is the concept of traumatic growth, which simply means that positive personal development can be the result of working through your trauma. Such positive results may be a greater appreciation for life, improved self-esteem, a greater awareness and understanding of yourself, a stronger connection to others, and a more solid understanding of your meaning and purpose in life.
